Tesich’s prose is focused and his observation’s of everyday occurences and interactions with ourselves and with eachother are frighteningly real. The lead character, Saul Karoo, the anti-hero in every sense of the word, is both loveable and detestable.

The descriptions meander, the action is less than crisp and the same point is laboured too often. No trivia or quizzes yet. The book is so funny that you don’t realize how deep you get into the life of Saul Karoo, and by stfve time you do its too late.

Instead he spent his time writing screenplays or fixing up the screenplays that other people had written poorly. Now, I know that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be a good book, but the trouble is that the writing is just not good enough to get us on board with him.
